Mariel Kieval is a Research Associate at The Arctic Institute. She is a contributing writer for The Arctic This Week’s Take Five, the Institute’s weekly news analysis publication, and previously wrote for the Institute’s flagship weekly publication, The Arctic This Week (TATW).

Mariel holds an MSc in Agriculture and Forestry from the University of Helsinki, where she studied the socioecological ramifications of extractivism, resource governance, and energy cultures. Her thesis, From Sea to Steppe: Perceptions of the Energy Transition Across Kazakhstan’s Petrostate, explored how diverse actors navigate the entangled politics of energy and identity. Her research interests include watery and geographic imaginaries, land use and rural justice, and low- and high-carbon landscapes in Central Asia and the Arctic.

She currently serves as Managing Editor of the Antarctic Science Journal. Previously, she served on the board of the US Association of Early Polar Career Scientists (US APECS) and is a council member for APECS International. Mariel holds BAs in International Relations and Environmental Studies from Tufts University in Boston and is excited by the potential for innovation and diplomacy in the Arctic and by its -20°C temperatures.
