Whale Acoustics Webinar from the Gulf of Alaska

Tuesday August 18th, 2020

Learn how high school students use long-term acoustic recordings to monitor marine mammals and anthropogenic activities in the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic, in this Migration in Harmony NSF RCN webinar. Presented by students from the Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska, this webinar will highlight the important contributions to marine mammal research through an internship and technology training program, called SeaTech. This webinar is a good opportunity for anyone interested in the Arctic, marine mammals, acoustics, or exploring collaborative approaches to science-based education and outreach.

Join us to meet this exceptional and culturally diverse group of students, their dedicated science teacher, and the scientists who work closely with them. Learn what these young researchers have found in long-term recordings of underwater sound in the Gulf of Alaska and find out how the SeaTech program is working to provide a depth of experience in oceanography to motivated high school students from communities around the state of Alaska.

You will hear from Anne Simonis, Acoustic ecologist studying marine mammals with NOAA Fisheries; Michael Mahoney, Science Teacher and Seatech Mentor with Mt. Edgecumbe High School; Josh Jones, Graduate Student Researcher, Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Tessa Baldwin, LMSW (Licensed Master’s in Social Work) is an Mt. Edgecumbe and UCSD Alumni, she currently works as a behavioral health therapist in rural Alaska; Ian Sia, Former Intern, Whale Acoustics Lab, Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and Doreen Leavitt, Former Intern, Whale Acoustics Lab, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Migration In Harmony is an international, cross-disciplinary network of Arctic migration researchers funded by the National Science Foundation and co-led by The Arctic Institute. Learn more and sign up here.
