Emma van der Wal is a Research Associate at The Arctic Institute and TAI’s Social Media Manager. She edits, publishes, and monitors content throughout The Arctic Institute’s social media accounts (FacebookLinkedInTwitter, and Instagram). Emma’s areas of interests include European security and defence, Arctic policy, international security and geopolitics.

Currently, she works as a project researcher at the Dutch Ministry of Defence in Utrecht. She recently graduated from Maastricht University with a Master’s degree in European Studies: International Relations at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS). Her Master’s thesis analysed Norway’s perception of the EU’s growing ambitions in the European Arctic since 2008. She also completed several Russian language courses taught at the Language Centre in Maastricht.

Besides a Master’s degree, Emma holds a Bachelor’s degree in European Studies and has previously studied a minor in History & International Politics at the Reading University in the United Kingdom.
