Research Topics:

Elise Nyborg is a Research Associate at The Arctic Institute. She is the editor of the Institute’s weekly news analysis publication, The Arctic This Week’s Take Five, having previously worked as one of its lead writers. Her research interests include environmental conflict, political ecology, and the interdisciplinary applications of geospatial technologies. She currently works as a policy advisor on marine environmental issues for the UK Chamber of Shipping.

Elise is a member of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists as well as the Arctic Youth Network. In 2021, she interned for the International Barents Secretariat in Kirkenes, Norway, where she worked on issues of cross-border environmental cooperation. She was also a participant of the first Regional Innovation Lab hosted by UNLEASH in Greenland in 2022, the only UNLEASH program to focus exclusively on Arctic and Nordic sustainability challenges.

Elise holds a BA in Geography and an MPhil in Polar Studies from the University of Cambridge. Her postgraduate research at the Scott Polar Research Institute explored changing wildfire regimes in the Russian taiga with a focus on forest-permafrost dynamics, landscape theory, and Indigenous climate change adaptation. Her undergraduate dissertation, exploring Indigenous Sámi resistance to wind energy development projects in Norway, received the 2020 Royal Geographical Society international dissertation award in Energy Geographies.
