Washington, D.C., 14 June 2021. The University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program releases an annual list of the top think tanks around the world. The Arctic Institute (TAI) is pleased to be named a Top 100 Think Tank in the United States in the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index. TAI has consistently ranked in the top 100 U.S. think tanks since 2016.

  • Ranking by University of Pennsylvania – Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program
  • The Arctic Institute ranks #71
  • All-volunteer team comprised of early career scholars and practitioners

The Arctic Institute is unique among those ranked in that early career scholars, practitioners, and scientists largely volunteer their time. “Ever since establishing TAI in 2011, our fellows – old and new – have spent weekend after weekend to build this Arctic network and think tank,” said Senior Fellow Dr. Andreas Raspotnik, who referred to the content TAI publishes as well as the design of the website, news app, social media, and podcast.

Each year the editorial team at TAI is responsible for the publication of over 70 articles, infographics, and reports from staff members as well as early career and graduate students, scholars, Indigenous stakeholders, and military/government personnel from around the world. “It’s really rewarding to be able to showcase the work of so many talented scholars, on topics ranging from geopolitics, to climate change, to northern culture and everything in between” said Alina Bykova, who has worked at TAI since 2018 and serves as Editor-in-Chief. “I’m always impressed by the variety and depth of issues and questions that our writers work on and I’m so proud of the TAI team for facilitating this excellent exchange of information through our platform.” TAI has also launched several series, including “Breaking the Arctic’s Ice Ceiling,” “Indigenous Languages in the Arctic,” “China in the Arctic,” “COVID-19 in the Arctic,” the co-sponsored series with the Gordon Foundation called “Canadian Arctic Policy Critiques,” and our newest “Arctic Institute Conflict Series.”

The Arctic Institute is especially pleased to be considered a Top 100 Think Tank as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. TAI recently launched a Visiting Fellowship program with a cohort of scholars from around the world studying circumpolar natural and social sciences. Dr. Ekaterina Uryupova, a Visiting Fellow from Russia, said “Here at the Arctic Institute, it has been a wonderful journey with such a professional team – people who know the Arctic and who care about the future of the region! I am glad to work with professionals from different areas of expertise.” We thank our followers for their support and look forward to producing more high-caliber research in the years to come.

Established in 2011, The Arctic Institute is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. with a network of researchers across the world. The Arctic Institute’s mission is to help inform policy for a rapidly changing Arctic in the context of the climate crisis.
